What will the PMO do?
The function of a PMO will depend on the type of model implemented.
At the most basic level, it provides a repository of standard documents and processes for Project Managers to use.
In a more active model, the PMO will provide governance that those documents are being used and the processes followed (via stage gate reviews, for example).
Initially, Chevin’s PMO will fulfill the following functions:
Act as a framework for Project Managers
Set the standards for how projects are delivered
Implement governance processes to ensure adherence to the standards
Provide a standard document template set
Become the source of all delivery metrics
Promote project management and its successes to the wider business
Interestingly, the Project Management Institute (PMI) reports that 71% of companies which employ Project Managers have a PMO in place and this figure has been increasing as organisations become more aware of the benefits.
