Day Aggregates is a UK-based construction company that specializes in the supply of primary and recycled aggregates to the construction, civil engineering, and landscaping industries. Founded in 1947, the company has grown into one of the largest independent suppliers of aggregates in the UK, with a reputation for sustainability and innovation. Day Aggregates operates a network of quarries, depots, and recycling centres, ensuring they can supply a wide range of materials, including crushed stone, sand, gravel, and recycled aggregates, to projects of all sizes.

The company is known for its strong commitment to environmental responsibility, actively promoting the use of recycled materials in construction to reduce waste and conserve natural resources. Day Aggregates operates a diverse fleet of vehicles tailored to the construction and recycling industries, including tipper trucks, articulated lorries (HGVs), grab lorries, rigid trucks, and walking floor trailers. These vehicles transport bulk materials like sand, gravel, and recycled aggregates from quarries and depots to construction sites. They also use specialist recycling vehicles to collect and transport recyclable materials. In line with their commitment to sustainability, Day Aggregates is incorporating low-emission and Euro 6-compliant vehicles into their fleet and exploring alternative fuel options to reduce environmental impact.

Day Aggregates has been using FleetWave to manage their fleet for two decades, since 2004. The company operates 225 vehicles across 24 depots, with a transport office staffed by 8 people responsible for managing the servicing and maintenance of these vehicles.

We spoke with Mark Hawkins, Transport Office Manager at Day Aggregates, to understand the impact FleetWave has had on their operations.

 

Challenges

Before adopting FleetWave, Day Aggregates faced significant challenges in managing their growing fleet with a paper-based system. As the fleet expanded, so did the volume of paperwork involved in tracking vehicle servicing, maintenance, and compliance. “We started with just a few vehicles, but as the fleet grew, so did the paperwork. We ended up with about 10 filing cabinets, and had too much paper in the office,” explained Mark.

This system created inefficiencies, making it difficult to quickly access records and manage maintenance schedules. Manual tracking of service intervals increased the risk of human error and non-compliance, underscoring the need for a more efficient, digital solution.

With FleetWave, the company could upload service reports and instantly access vehicle histories, significantly reducing their reliance on paper files. The software’s automated maintenance scheduling eliminated manual calculations, ensuring service intervals were met on time.

  • Increased Efficiency: One of the biggest benefits has been the overall efficiency. “We no longer need to walk back and forth to the printer or filing room.” Says Mark. Everything is stored digitally and accessible instantly.
  • Paperless Operations: FleetWave enabled Day Aggregates to become 90% paperless, significantly reducing administrative overhead. “We used to go through two reams of paper a day, now it’s down to one a week, if that,” said Mark. This shift has streamlined access to fleet data, resulting in faster and more efficient decision-making.
  • Improved Administration: “FleetWave has saved us a vast amount of time—not just in eliminating trips to the filing room, but by giving us all the information at our fingertips. When we were paper-based, we could only keep about 15 months of history. Now, we have it all digitally.”
  • Automated Maintenance Scheduling: FleetWave has been a game-changer for scheduling at Day Aggregates “Scheduling helps massively, instead of us having to work out the 6 weekly interval manually, this now is automatically generated with a date, ” explains Mark.
