We interviewed Diego Maldonado, Data Analyst at the United Nations World Food Programme about his experience using FleetWave to manage over 5,500 vehicles and associated assets. The UN WFP have been using FleetWave for over 20 years, it was implemented in 2002 after historically relying upon paper-based fleet management processes.

The UN WFP is a major humanitarian aid agency who were looking to effectively manage both light and heavy vehicle operations in a globally challenging environment. The roll out of our fleet management software was to improve visibility of fleet requirements, streamline efficiencies and reduce cost, allowing the humanitarian agency to better provide its vital service to those most in need.

The World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. In emergencies, the NGO gets food to where it is needed, saving the lives of victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters. After the cause of an emergency has passed, The World Food Programme uses food to help communities rebuild their shattered lives.

Could you explain a bit about what your company does?

“We are part of the United Nations, we are delivering humanitarian assistance around the world, in more than 90 countries.”

What is your fleet size?

“Currently, our fleet size is around 4,500 vehicles, plus 1,200 generators. More than 5,000 trucks are operating every day between commercial, rentals and owned, so it’s very large.”

What are some of the specific challenges of running a fleet in your industry?

“What’s challenging is the fact that we have limited resources. For example, the number of staff using the tool, it certainly has limited time. So we need to maximize the user experience, make it simple, make it as user friendly as possible.”

How has FleetWave helped overcome the challenges you were experiencing?

“FleetWave helps us definitely, in terms of the compliance, in terms of our fleet policy, we are able to track, to monitor better our operation in terms of staff, in terms of the assets itself. Age of vehicles, for example, is particularly important to have safe fleets, environmentally friendly and I think that it’s easily supporting our main goals as an organization.”

What features do you use most in FleetWave?

“My favourite one is assets, but we definitely run or take sort of analysis of based on fuel maintenance, accidents, the kilometres even. So this is kind of the main indicators that we use in order to create reports, presented to our managers or our stakeholders, this is important.”

Why would you recommend Chevin?

“Chevin has the experience, Chevin has the know how in order to succeed in this industry, which is fleet management.

It is certainly a valuable asset that the company has, you know, they have invested a lot into the software so that other companies can start following better their motor assets and in order to optimize their consumption, and the performance of this type of assets, I think it’s important for them.”
