Background
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety (NMDPS) is a state agency dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of New Mexico’s citizens. It oversees multiple divisions, including the New Mexico State Police, Motor Transportation Division, and other critical public safety units.
NMDPS manages a fleet of over 1,300 vehicles tailored to law enforcement and emergency response, ensuring that officers have the tools needed to respond swiftly and effectively across the state. The fleet is maintained for optimal performance, focusing on reliability and safety to support the department’s operations, particularly in patrolling rural and urban areas alike.
We spoke with Gwendolyn Romero, Business Operations Specialist at New Mexico Department of Public Safety about how FleetWave has improved their fleet management processes.
Challenges
Before implementing FleetWave, NMDPS was using a traditional Graphical User Interface (GUI) system for their fleet management needs. The limitations of this outdated system created several operational challenges. Gwendolyn recalls: “There wasn’t anything easy about it, it wasn’t customizable either, so we had to use it the way it was, everybody hated it.”
Our Solution
The implementation of FleetWave in 2018 marked a turning point for NMDPS, completely reshaping their fleet management approach. FleetWave’s web-based platform provided a highly customizable and intuitive solution, which directly addressed the challenges the department had been facing with their previous system. Its user-friendly interface empowered the team, offering real-time insights into vehicle status, maintenance schedules, and asset data. This allowed fleet managers to shift from reactive to proactive decision-making, enhancing overall efficiency.
As Gwendolyn Romero explains: “We shopped around and looked for the system that was going to be best for us, and it was FleetWave. We saw what it could do, and we were impressed by its capabilities compared to other systems. That’s why we chose FleetWave. It was user-friendly, and although change isn’t ideal for everyone, once they learned it, it became much easier for them.”
Impact
The introduction of FleetWave has significantly improved operations within NMDPS. Gwendolyn highlights the importance of automation, stating, “The whole automation of it. Being able to access the accessibility. Being able to access it from anywhere as long as you have the internet in your laptop, now phones. But yeah, so for us, it made doing our jobs much easier.” This enhanced accessibility has streamlined workflows, allowing staff to manage their tasks more effectively regardless of location.
Additionally, Gwendolyn emphasizes the strengths of the FleetWave system, noting, “First off is just the system itself. What actually sold us most on FleetWave is the vehicle module. Because on the vehicle module, you can see everything that’s going on in the back end.” The visibility provided by the vehicle module enables NMDPS to monitor all aspects of fleet operations, ensuring that they have comprehensive oversight and can respond swiftly to any issues that may arise.
The combination of automation and in-depth visibility has not only made day-to-day tasks more manageable but also enhanced overall fleet management, positioning NMDPS for continued success in their public safety efforts.
The FleetWave system has made a positive impact and has made it easier in the way we do our jobs in our fleet operations. From the purchase to disposal and everything in between. FleetWave makes tracking the vehicle during its lifetime easy to access and we use the tools to acquire the information we need to maintain each vehicle. FleetWave is fabulous!
