Background
BC Hydro is a major utility company serving communities across British Columbia, Canada. Its fleet plays an important role in supporting the organisation’s day-to-day operations, providing the vehicles and equipment needed to keep services running safely and efficiently across the province.
Managing a diverse operational fleet requires accurate and accessible information across multiple areas, from labor and parts to vehicle utilization, maintenance and compliance. For BC Hydro, having the right systems in place is essential to ensuring its fleet remains available, compliant and efficiently managed.
BC Hydro uses FleetWave to bring key fleet information together and improve visibility across its operations. By providing a central platform for managing labour, parts, utilization and inspections, FleetWave has helped the organization improve the accuracy of its fleet data and make more informed operational decisions.
We spoke with Tracy Hill, Business Operations Manager at BC Hydro, about the challenges the organization faced before FleetWave, how the platform has improved fleet management and compliance, and the benefits the business continues to realize as it makes greater use of the system.
Challenges
For BC Hydro, their previous system before FleetWave did not provide the functionality or visibility they needed. In particular, ensuring mechanics were accurately recording their labour hours was a challenge, making it more difficult to gain a complete picture of how resources were being used.
As Tracy explains: “The hardest part of managing my fleet was capturing the labor, the parts, and the utilization accurately and efficiently. Before that, the system that we were using just didn’t do that.”
Limited visibility also made it harder for BC Hydro to manage vehicle utilization, inform replacement planning and effectively monitor commercial vehicle inspections. The organization needed a more reliable way to capture operational data, improve oversight and maintain compliance.
Our Impact
FleetWave has given BC Hydro greater control and visibility across its fleet operations, improving how the organization captures and manages key data. This includes more efficient labour tracking and parts management, giving the team more accurate information to support day-to-day decision-making.
FleetWave has also enabled BC Hydro to integrate telematics data into its fleet management processes. As Tracy explains: “We’re now able to track the parts more efficiently, and we’re getting data from our telematics into the system so that we can manage the utilization.” This has strengthened the data available to support the organization’s fleet replacement strategy.
FleetWave has also had a significant impact on the management of commercial vehicle inspections. The platform gives the team greater visibility of inspection requirements, making it easier to identify upcoming inspections, manage what is due and plan proactively.
This improved visibility has also made it easier for BC Hydro to coordinate inspections with its clients. Previously, there was limited visibility of inspection requirements between BC Hydro and its clients, making coordination more difficult. FleetWave now provides a clearer way to share inspection information and work with clients to schedule the time needed to complete inspections.
As Tracy explains: “There’s more visibility into it. We can schedule easier with our clients, where before we had no client facing, and now we actually do have capability to have client facing.”
Benefits
FleetWave has delivered measurable improvements across BC Hydro’s fleet operation:
- 100% compliance visibility – BC Hydro can now accurately see 100% compliance with commercial vehicle inspections, compared with an estimated 60–70% previously.
- Simpler inspection management – Greater visibility and client-facing capabilities make it easier to manage requirements and coordinate schedules with clients.
- Improved labour and parts management – More effective tracking provides greater control over fleet resources and operational activity.
- Better fleet planning – Telematics and utilization data support more informed vehicle replacement decisions.
- Ongoing efficiency gains – Continued adoption of FleetWave’s capabilities is helping BC Hydro find new ways to improve its operations.
Conclusion
For BC Hydro, the value of FleetWave has grown as the organization has expanded its use of the platform. Greater visibility, improved data and stronger compliance management have created a foundation for continued efficiency and better-informed fleet decisions.
Tracy highlights this ongoing development: “The benefits of FleetWave have compounded over time just through the new capabilities.”
She also points to the support provided by Chevin in helping BC Hydro get more from the platform: “They’re always looking to help take you to that next level and giving me ideas on what I can do with that next level.”
For organizations considering FleetWave, Tracy’s recommendation is clear: “I would absolutely say go for it. I think the product is great. It’s always getting better, innovative. The people are great to work with. They’re supportive.”
