Just 10 months after our Project Manager, Lisa Hyland started her role at Chevin her son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 6.

About 8% of people with diabetes in the UK have type 1 diabetes. It’s a serious and lifelong condition where your blood glucose level is too high because your body can’t make insulin, which is needed to live.

Lisa wanted to share her story to show that it is possible to balance caring for her son with her career, and to let other families in similar situations know that they are not alone.

Lisa’s Story

Over night our lives changed, more importantly Williams life changed forever! Nothing could have prepared us for the endless injections, multiple finger pricks, sleepless night and the life time journey we are now on.

Needing to take time out within my first year at Chevin concerned me. It felt a big ask so soon into my role. Everyone was incredibly supportive, to be given the time to come to terms with the diagnosis and to process the change to our lives was especially valuable. Chevin allows me the flexibility within my role to attend regular clinic appointments with my son, but more importantly gives me the ability to be there when he needs support.

Type 1 diabetes is not fun, its hard work and we face daily ups and downs. Despite all the challenges, the most important lesson we can teach is William is that this will not stop him achieving his dreams.
