A problem that most in the fleet industry are already acutely aware of, the shortage of semiconductors is continuing to cause issues for many.\u00a0But how could it\u00a0impact\u00a0your fleet?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are semiconductors and why are they important?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Semiconductors are\u00a0essentially computer\u00a0chips\u00a0that perform various functions in modern products.\u00a0Many bits of tech rely on these chips, such as vehicles, washing machines and smartphones.\u00a0Without them,\u00a0these products\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0work \u2013 making them vital to the manufacturing process.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is there a shortage?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

When the pandemic hit in 2020, many of the factories that produce these vital parts were\u00a0closed down\u00a0or had reduced staffing for\u00a0long periods\u00a0of time.\u00a0This, combined with the\u00a0surge in demand during the pandemic for consumer electricals, has resulted in a global shortage.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But the problems had\u00a0actually begun\u00a0before this. With the rise of 5G came an increased demand for semiconductors, and manufacturing complexities also hampered production.\u00a0The semiconductor\u00a0demand has also been heightened by the popularity of driver\u00a0assistance\u00a0systems and autonomous driving in new vehicles.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0shortage is expected to continue into 2022 and\u00a0possibly\u00a0even beyond.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How has it\u00a0impacted\u00a0the world?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Vehicle manufacturers\u00a0have been\u00a0amongst some of the hardest-hit, with the shortage making it impossible to manufacture\u00a0new cars and vans without missing certain\u00a0important features.\u00a0This has in turn led to longer wait times for new vehicles, with fleet operators and company car drivers facing\u00a0delays\u00a0of up to a year\u00a0for certain new car and van models.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The used car market has also been significantly\u00a0impacted, with the shortage creating unprecedented demand that has pushed the residual value to record highs as fewer vehicles are\u00a0de-fleeted, causing issues for leasing companies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some manufacturers have dropped certain features entirely to ensure they can continue making new vehicles, with tech such as wireless cell phone charging and hands-free trunk access disappearing entirely to ensure production can continue. It’s expected that retrofitting of some of these features may occur in the future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How will it\u00a0impact\u00a0my fleet?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

So far, the shortage has set the manufacturing world back considerably.\u00a0Orders for the 2021 model year have been cut off earlier than usual, and\u00a095% of fleets\u00a0have\u00a0reported\u00a0delays in\u00a0receiving new vehicles,\u00a0meaning that reliance on existing vehicles is the only option for now.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New vehicles are being produced, but many are without the usual features due to the shortage\u00a0and it may be that you need to forgo some of your tech spec in order to get your vehicles more quickly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What can I do?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The main advice for fleets is to continue placing orders for new vehicles to ensure they\u2019re\u00a0on the waitlist \u2013 but to expect current vehicles to be on the road for at least another 12 months\u00a0before they\u2019re replaced.\u00a0Manufacturers are prioritising electric vehicles, so if you\u2019re looking to go down the EV route now might be the time to do it,\u00a0as it\u2019s likely you\u2019ll get your vehicles a little quicker.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Transparency is key to allow fleet managers to plan efficiently for the shortage, and\u00a0keeping lines of communication open with manufacturers will be vital to give realistic timelines.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
