For example, you should ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do mileage figures provided by the driver correlate with odometer readings?<\/li>\n<li>Does the volume of fuel listed on a receipt exceed the vehicles\u2019 maximum fuel tank capacity?<\/li>\n<li>Has the driver purchased the correct type of fuel?<\/li>\n<li>Is the vehicle\u2019s MPG reading unusually low?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the answers to the above questions reveal discrepancies and the numbers don\u2019t quite add up, you may be a victim of fuel fraud.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Common Crimes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are several ways an employee may try to de-fraud you \u2013 so it\u2019s important to understand the different scams and how they occur:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mileage Creeping:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the most common forms of fuel fraud when employees are reimbursed, this refers to inflating mileage figures when personal vehicles are used for business purposes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fuel Deceit:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This can include numerous fraudulent actions such as filling non-approved vehicles; claiming a fuel purchase that exceeds a vehicle\u2019s fuel tank capacity, and \u2018side fueling\u2019 when the driver pumps fuel into a container for personal use, but still charges the business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fuel Card Fraud:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An increasingly common form of fraud, this refers to inflating fuel card transactions by sharing fuel cards and authorizing multiple pump purchases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fuel Type Fraud:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This simply means purchasing the wrong type of fuel, which indicates that the purchase has been made for an unauthorized vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fuel Siphoning:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This occurs when fuel is removed from the tank of a vehicle for personal use. Some of the preventive actions you can take include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Allocating Fuel Cards and PINs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Issuing your drivers with fuel cards gives you more control over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/en-us\/learning-zone\/managing-fleet-fuel-purchases\/\">purchasing of fuel<\/a> but it\u2019s also worth prompting drivers to enter a Personal Identification Number when using them.
