Whilst some fleet managers\u00a0have embraced the technology and have strategies in place to begin phasing out gas and diesel powered vehicles, others may be wondering when the right time to consider them should be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Questions for fleet managers to consider may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When is the best time to introduce electric vehicles?<\/li>\n<li>How much do electric fleet vehicles cost to purchase, fuel and maintain?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a charging structure in place to support my electric fleet?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, what do you need to know about an electric fleet?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Costs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>By running on electricity supplied by rechargeable batteries,<span style=\"color: #e6283e;\"> <a style=\"color: #e6283e;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.solar-estimate.org\/news\/2018-03-07-do-electric-vehicles-cost-less-to-drive-than-gas-powered-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>EVs\u00a0cost much\u00a0less to charge than it does to refuel\u00a0a diesel or gas powered vehicle<\/u><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0 Electric vehicles\u00a0also generate considerably less noise than diesel or gas powered units and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/en-us\/learning-zone\/sustainability-the-route-to-zero-emissions\/\">produce virtually zero emissions<\/a>, making them ideal for use in urban locations. They react quickly, making them responsive and have a good torque too.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a higher purchase cost,\u00a0electric\u00a0vehicles overall can<span style=\"color: #e6283e;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #e6283e;\" href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/ev-vs-ice-maintenance-the-first-100000-miles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>prove much cheaper\u00a0to operate.<\/u><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Incentivising\u00a0EV deployment in fleets<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Whilst for many fleets the advantages of incorporating electric vehicles\u00a0are clear,\u00a0premium pricing still remains off-putting.\u00a0As with most technology, mass production means that the cost of an EV is beginning to fall but it will take some time for the price\u00a0to fall in line with gas and diesel powered vehicles.\u00a0Helping foster that growth, however, are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/electricvehicles\/electric-vehicles-tax-credits-and-other-incentives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"><span style=\"color: #e6283e;\"> tax credits\u00a0of up to $7,500 per new EV purchased.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/a>Regional, state and local incentive programs\u00a0are also in place\u00a0with the\u00a0aim of helping\u00a0fleets recoup some of the higher purchase price costs of electric vehicles\u00a0in a bid to\u00a0boost\u00a0their adoption.<\/p>\n<p>They do, however take longer to refuel which needs to be factored into journeys taken. Electric hybrid&#8217;s (PHEVs) can be a good compromise as they can switch from an electric to a combustion engine when needed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Maintenance <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>EV&#8217;s have\u00a0fewer mechanical parts too which means that there\u00a0are less components\u00a0to go wrong with them &#8211;\u00a0good news for\u00a0<span style=\"color: #e6283e;\"><a style=\"color: #e6283e;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/en-us\/learning-zone\/how-to-create-an-effective-fleet-maintenance-programme\/\">maintenance scheduling<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and reducing downtime! In addition to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/en-us\/learning-zone\/fuel-saving-tips-infographic\/\">fuel savings<\/a> that can be made, which is ,\u00a0EVs\u00a0don&#8217;t require\u00a0oils, lubricants and other fluids which reduces both costs and waste.<\/p>\n<p>As with combustion engine vehicles, they<span style=\"color: #e6283e;\"> <a style=\"color: #e6283e;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/support\/car-maintenance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">do require an annual service and inspection which needs to be factored into the life cycle costs<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Operation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One of the barriers to widespread EV use is\u00a0due to &#8216;range anxiety&#8217; about the distance they\u00a0can travel on a single charge. The good news is that this range is on the increase! As EV technology develops, so too does the distance that they can travel on a full battery.<\/p>\n<p>So,\u00a0how far can an EV go?<\/p>\n<p>The distance traveled varies depending\u00a0on a number of factors such\u00a0as the size of the engine, the\u00a0number of passengers it is carrying\u00a0and the speed at which it is travelling. Top of the\u00a0range <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1107455_2017-electric-cars-with-more-than-100-miles-of-range#disqus_thread\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vehicles such as the Tesla&#8217;s are pushing 360 miles on a single charge\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>&#8211; more than adequate for\u00a0most daily journeys.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The charge point infrastructure<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In terms of charge points, there\u00a0are\u00a0a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechiq.com\/2018\/08\/briefing-ev-charging-infrastructure-moves-ahead-in-us-and-around-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">projects underway to expand the infrastructure.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0As an idea as to how much investment has taken place, in 2008 there were only a mere 430 charge points in place across the States.\u00a0Fast forward ten years\u00a0and this\u00a0number has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/niallmccarthy\/2018\/04\/09\/the-evolution-of-u-s-electric-vehicle-charging-points-infographic\/#43d471a54164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> increased to nearer 60,000 at workplaces and other public locations<\/a>,\u00a0450,00 including those installed in homes. And this number is only set to increase!<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, according to the Edison\u00a0Electric Institute (EEI), which represents electric companies in the US, <span style=\"color: #e6283e;\"><a style=\"color: #e6283e;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eei.org\/issuesandpolicy\/electrictransportation\/Documents\/EV_Trends_and_Key_Issues_March2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>partnerships with stakeholders continue to\u00a0 support the growth of the nation&#8217;s charging infrastructure.<\/u><\/a> <\/span>Alongside their partners,\u00a0EEI reports that they\u00a0will be deploying nearly 90,000 charging stations throughout their country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12581 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/green-car.jpg\" alt=\"statistic in favour of electric fleet vehicles - 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide are saved each year by switching to electric vehicles\" width=\"1285\" height=\"478\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>4. Corporate Responsibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>EVs produce very few emissions and are much better for the environment than gas and diesel vehicles. Driving EVs can cut the<span style=\"color: #e6283e;\"> <a style=\"color: #e6283e;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chargepoint.com\/about\/sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">use of fossil fuels to power our vehicles in half.<\/a><\/span> The use of renewable energy to generate electricity reduces this even further.<span style=\"color: #e6283e;\"> <a style=\"color: #e6283e;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chargepoint.com\/about\/sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The average American can avoid more than 2.5 tonnes of carbon emissions\u00a0per year by switching to an EV.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Including EVs within a fleet supports a company&#8217;s sustainability targets which creates a positive, caring impression towards the environment which resonates positively with employees, customers and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>So when should you begin investing\u00a0in an electric fleet?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you have not already, started then probably now! Whilst some states are leaving it to fleet managers to develop their own electric vehicle\u00a0deployment and emission reduction targets, other city and state governments have set specific targets.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a good practice for fleets to set their own targets in terms of emission reductions across the entire fleet. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/en-us\/learning-zone\/top-things-think-selecting-fleet-vehicles\/\">Fleet managers need to determine the business requirements of fleet vehicles<\/a> and their drivers to evaluate the merits of switching to greener fueled vehicles. Most businesses have a corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda that should represent a proportion on investing in electric vehicles into the fleet to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/en-us\/learning-zone\/reduce-co2-emissions\/\">reduce CO2 emissions and the overall carbon footprint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the heavy <span style=\"color: #e6283e;\"><a style=\"color: #e6283e;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fleetsforthefuture.org\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>investment being seen in the technology by both car manufacturers and governmental departments across the Globe<\/u><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0for those fleets that don&#8217;t have an EV adoption policy in place, it is advisable\u00a0to begin this process in the very near future.
