They also operate \u201cassets\u201d beyond simple road vehicles, such as trailers, excavators and forklifts.<\/p>\n<p>The fleet of Washington Gas is essential to daily operations: without reliable vehicles, its crews could not reach job sites to install new pipelines, carry out maintenance, respond to leaks or emergencies, or perform repairs and new-construction work.<\/p>\n<p>Washington Gas have been using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/en-us\/products\/fleetwave\/\">FleetWave<\/a> for over a decade now, since 2012 to manage their fleet. We spoke to Chelsea Shelton, Fleet Manager, Wendy Marquez, Fleet Specialist, and Lamonte Copeland, Fleet Vehicle Technician, about how FleetWave helps them keep their diverse fleet running smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How Washington Gas Modernised Workshop Performance, Productivity, and Compliance with FleetWave\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mHGG_EPgra8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/en-us\/products\/fleetwave\/\">FleetWave<\/a>, Washington Gas struggled with tracking and managing its large and diverse fleet. With hundreds of vehicles and a wide range of assets, it was often difficult to know exactly what equipment was available, or where it was located. Lamonte explained: <em>\u201cWe often didn\u2019t know which vehicles each of our departments had, and we were trying to manage it on spreadsheets.\u201d <\/em>Relying on spreadsheets and manual tracking made it challenging to coordinate resources efficiently and ensure that crews had the right equipment when and where it was needed.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to operational visibility, compliance and safety management were also significant challenges. Chelsea Shelton, Fleet Manager, recalled: <em>\u201cWe were at a place at one point where our assets were overdue and they weren\u2019t visible.\u201d<\/em> Without a centralized system to monitor inspections, certifications, and maintenance, overdue assets could go unnoticed, creating risks for both the vehicles and the crews relying on them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Solution<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Washington Gas implemented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/en-us\/products\/fleetwave\/\">FleetWave<\/a>, and now also use the FleetWave Companion apps, FleetWave Driver and FleetWave Technician, to manage its large and diverse fleet efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea Shelton, Fleet Manager, explained that FleetWave serves as the central fleet management database, while the Driver App enabled field staff to complete tasks remotely: <em>\u201cThe app was very beneficial for our guys in the field, so they could get their own tickets completed and the work done. It&#8217;s also easy for our technicians to see it on their side to service the vehicle, so they don\u2019t have to come into the shop.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since implementing FleetWave, Washington Gas has seen measurable operational improvements across the fleet. The system provides a single source of truth for all fleet data, enabling better decision-making and real-time visibility into assets: Chelsea states: \u201c<em>I use FleetWave to input vehicle information or equipment information from cradle to grave. We use the order screen until we make the vehicles or equipment active. I also run reports like for registrations, and we use the KPIs to track the budget and fuel. It\u2019s compatible with our internal systems too.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Impact<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The fleet utilization and maintenance tracking features have helped Washington Gas optimise vehicle replacement decisions and reduce older, less efficient vehicles. Chelsea<em> notes: <strong>\u201cWe\u2019ve reduced about 20% of our older fleet, just by having the fleet utilization data. It benchmarks based off the parameters we have set in the system.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>She added:<em> \u201cIt also helps because just because a vehicle is older, doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean it needs to be replaced. For example, something newer could have higher mileage and higher idle hours, so that should go first, and FleetWave helps us make those decisions.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>FleetWave has also improved compliance and safety by ensuring timely inspections, certifications, and maintenance. Chelsea explains: <em>\u201cHaving the compliance menu has helped us continue to keep our guys safe because we can see if a trailer hasn&#8217;t been inspected for example, and find out how many days it\u2019s overdue, the emissions, or if any technicians medical cards are about to expire. We can ensure that they have all their certifications up to date, which means they&#8217;re safe. So it not only keeps our vehicles great and compliant, but it also keeps those operating our machines safe too.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chelsea highlights how FleetWave acts as a single source of truth for the entire fleet:<em> \u201cAs soon as we procure the vehicle, we can track it, see what upfitter it\u2019s at, and how much the vehicle cost. If we want to dispose of a vehicle, we sell it through another third-party system, but that system imports into FleetWave, so we can see how much we got for that vehicle.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She adds:<em> We can track budget, fuel cost, and see how we&#8217;re trending over 5 years vs 3 years. We track natural gas vs liquid fuel, and compliance, emissions, inspections and registrations &#8211; you name it. It literally is our database of truth for our operation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The platform also saves Washington Gas time on reporting and reduces manual work. Wendy explains,<em> \u201cIt saves time because I don&#8217;t have to do everything manually. If I need a report, I can easily find the report that I need and I run it.\u201d<\/em> Previously, manual reporting tasks took approximately 15 minutes each day and required employees to remember to complete them consistently. By automating and streamlining this process, the platform <strong>saves around 1.25 hours per week, more than 65 hours per year<\/strong> per employee. This not only improves efficiency and reporting accuracy but also delivers measurable ROI by reducing administrative workload and freeing up time for higher-value activities.<\/p>\n<p>As a vehicle technician, Lamonte Copeland relies on FleetWave every day to manage his teams time and monitor productivity. A key feature for him is the time-tracking functionality. He states:<em> \u201cIt can measure what you did that day, how you\u2019re managing your time, all the way down to taking breaks and lunch. It\u2019s a good reference to be able to track your time, from the time you get in to the time you leave.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The FleetWave Technician app is currently used across four locations, supporting around 20 in-house technicians who all find the system intuitive to use. Lamonte states:<em> \u201cI ask them how they like it and everybody loves it. It\u2019s just very, very easy to use.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>FleetWave also streamlines vehicle servicing and maintenance tasks, helping Lamonte and his team locate vehicles and schedule work more effectively. He states:<em> \u201c It\u2019s great having everything at the click of a button, and with the integrations tool, we can pull our telematics into FleetWave, so we can locate vehicles quickly and get them into service.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lamonte adds: \u2018<em>It\u2019s improved our ordering process, we know which vehicles each center has been using, which gives us a baseline for moving forward and ordering new product.\u201d<\/em> This visibility helps ensure that they have the right vehicles for their tasks and supports more efficient planning and fleet allocation across the organization.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, FleetWave has enhanced collaboration with vendors, streamlined reporting, and provided insights that support strategic fleet planning, helping Washington Gas operate more efficiently and safely every day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With FleetWave, shop productivity increased to <strong>85\u201390% productive time<\/strong>, exceeding the company target of 80% and reducing non-productive time by up to <strong>50%<\/strong> (from 20% to as little as 10%).<\/p>\n<p>Washington Gas strongly recommends FleetWave for managing their fleet, equipment, and overall operations. Chelsea explains that FleetWave is much more than a fleet management system: <em>\u201cI\u2019d recommend FleetWave as a product to anybody to house all of their equipment, their vehicles or anything, it\u2019s literally our system of truth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chelsea states: <em>\u201cIt\u2019s top notch customer service. I&#8217;ve never had a bad experience.\u201d<\/em> She also highlights the exceptional customer support and relationship-building provided by Chevin: <em>\u201cEveryone on the Chevin team has reached out, they\u2019ve visited us on-site and created relationships with us.
