Whilst some fleet managers have embraced the technology and have strategies in place to begin phasing out gas and diesel powered vehicles, others may be wondering when the right time to consider them should be.<\/p>\n<p>Questions for fleet managers to consider may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When is the best time to introduce electric vehicles?<\/li>\n<li>How much do electric fleet vehicles cost to purchase, fuel and maintain?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a charging structure in place to support my electric fleet?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At an EV Drive Day held at Melbourne\u2019s Albert Park, it was found that <a href=\"https:\/\/thedriven.io\/2018\/11\/07\/australian-fleet-owners-look-to-shift-to-electric-vehicles\/\">after test driving an electric vehicle, the number of fleet managers and buyers likely to consider EVs rose to 82 per cent.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, what do you need to know about deploying EVs in you fleet?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Costs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>By running on electricity supplied by rechargeable batteries, <span style=\"color: #e6283e;\"><a style=\"color: #e6283e;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ergon.com.au\/network\/smarter-energy\/electric-vehicles\/charging-your-electric-vehicle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>EVs cost much less to charge than it does to refuel a diesel or petrol powered vehicle<\/u><\/a>.<\/span> electric vehicles also generate considerably less noise than diesel or gas powered units and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/en-au\/learning-zone\/sustainability-the-route-to-zero-emissions\/\">produce virtually zero emissions<\/a>, making them ideal for use in urban locations. They react quickly, making them responsive and have a good torque too.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a higher purchase cost, electric vehicles overall can <span style=\"color: #e6283e;\"><a style=\"color: #e6283e;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ergon.com.au\/network\/smarter-energy\/electric-vehicles\/benefits-of-electric-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>prove much cheaper to operate.<\/u><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Whilst for many fleets the advantages of incorporating electric vehicles are clear, premium pricing still remains off-putting. As with most technology, mass production means that the cost of an EV is beginning to fall but it will take some time for the price to fall in line with petrol and diesel powered vehicles. They do, however take longer to refuel which needs to be factored into journeys taken. Electric hybrid&#8217;s (PHEVs) can be a good compromise as they can switch from an electric to a combustion engine when needed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Maintenance <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>EV&#8217;s have fewer mechanical parts too which means that there are less components to go wrong with them &#8211; good news for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/au\/news\/creating-effective-fleet-maintenance-programme\/\">maintenance scheduling<\/a> and reducing downtime! In addition to fuel savings that can be made, which is , EVs don&#8217;t require oils, lubricants and other fluids which reduces both costs and waste.<\/p>\n<p>As with combustion engine vehicles, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/support\/car-maintenance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">do require an annual service and inspection which needs to be factored into the life cycle costs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Operation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One of the barriers to widespread EV use is due to &#8216;range anxiety&#8217; about the distance they can travel on a single charge. The good new is that this range is on the increase! As EV technology develops, so too does the distance that they can travel on a full battery.<\/p>\n<p>So, how far can an EV go?<\/p>\n<p>The distance traveled varies depending on a number of factors such as the size of the engine, the number of passengers it is carrying and the speed at which it is travelling. Top of the range <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1107455_2017-electric-cars-with-more-than-100-miles-of-range#disqus_thread\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vehicles such as the Tesla&#8217;s are pushing 360 miles on a single charge <\/a>&#8211; more than adequate for most daily journeys.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The charge point infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In terms of charge points, there are currently around 800 across which highlights the need for investment in infrastructure as predictions indicate that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governmentnews.com.au\/electric-vehicle-charging-network-a-high-national-priority\/\">by 2040 EVs will account for 70 per cent of new vehicle sales and 30 per cent of Australia\u2019s vehicle fleet<\/a>. Australia at the moment has a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/australian-government-invests-au6m-in-ev-charging-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">projects underway to expand the infrastructure<\/a>. And this number is only set to increase!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12581 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/green-car.jpg\" alt=\"statistic in favour of electric fleet vehicles - 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide are saved each year by switching to electric vehicles\" width=\"1285\" height=\"478\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Corporate Responsibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>EVs produce very few emissions and are much better for the environment than gas and diesel vehicles. Driving EVs can cut the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chargepoint.com\/about\/sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">use of fossil fuels to power our vehicles in half.<\/a> The use of renewable energy to generate electricity reduces this even further. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenvehicleguide.gov.au\/pages\/Information\/VehicleEmissions\">If Australian&#8217;s purchased electric vehicles, national CO2 emissions would be 50% lower.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Including EVs within a fleet supports a company&#8217;s sustainability targets which creates a positive, caring impression towards the environment which resonates positively with employees, customers and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>So when should you begin investing in an electric fleet?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you have not already, started then probably now!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a good practice for fleets to set their own targets in terms of emission reductions across the entire fleet. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/au\/news\/top-things-think-selecting-fleet-vehicles\/\">Fleet managers need to determine the business requirements of fleet vehicles<\/a> and their drivers to evaluate the merits of switching to greener fuelled vehicles. Most businesses have a corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda that should represent a proportion on investing in electric vehicles into the fleet to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevinfleet.com\/au\/news\/how-fleets-can-reduce-co2-emissions-and-lower-fuel-costs\/\">reduce CO2 emissions and the overall carbon footprint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the heavy<span style=\"color: #e6283e;\"> <a style=\"color: #e6283e;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fleetsforthefuture.org\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>investment being seen in the technology by both car manufacturers and governmental departments across the Globe<\/u><\/a><\/span>, for those fleets that don&#8217;t have an EV adoption policy in place, it is advisable to begin this process in the very near future.
