Environmental Impact Reporting

Managers can now see at a glance the environmental impact their fleets are having, enabling them to measure performance against pre-set targets and reduce pollution.

Chevin Fleet Solutions is sure the addition of Environmental Impact Reporting to its popular RoadBASE® system will appeal to fleets across the UK, keen to prove how ‘green’ they are. The computer system works out the amount of fuel used and distance travelled in a set period, showing how much CO_{2 has been emitted. It then compares this against manufacturers’ listed CO2 G/km figures and also the preceding period, to show how well each group of vehicles is performing. "Management of environmental issues is the new frontier in fleet management, and managers now need this kind of accurate information at their fingertips – it’s not enough just to know your fleet’s fuel consumption," said Ashley Sowerby, Chevin’s managing director. "Once managers know the environmental impact their fleets are having, they can start to make helpful changes – such as introducing or increasing the use of multi-fuel or hybrid vehicles and more efficient engines. Previously collating all the necessary information into an easy-to-read report was very difficult to do, but by creating our Environmental Impact report within RoadBASE®, we’ve made it easy. "This calculates the distance that each vehicle has travelled and how much fuel it has actually consumed, to provide an accurate calculation, based on the fuel’s combustion properties, of how much CO2 it has generated. Once this information is known, the report can then provide details such as the fleet’s average emissions per mile, trends such as 'performance this quarter over last quarter', or even show which cost-centres or divisions are performing best and which need further training or changes in policy.
